MEMORANDUM

TO: Alumni Directors

FROM: Audra Whitelock, Assistant Administrator

SUBJECT: AA-I Grant Program 2009

The Executive Committee of the University of Maryland Alumni Association-International, Inc. (AA-I) voted in March 2009 to suspend the current grant program. It became evident that the program was not adequately meeting the needs of the various USM alumni constituents. Therefore, the committee has decided to thoroughly review the current grant guidelines to ensure that they accurately support AA-I’s mission, goals and objectives and that we continue to serve as a resource to all UMS alumni programs.

AA-I would like to thank all of the dedicated volunteers who served over the years on our Grants Review Committee for their tirelessly dedication and the countless hours they devoted to the AA-I grants program. As we begin the process of assessing the grants program, however, we decided to disband the committee rather than limit our opportunities to restructure this important program.

During the interim period, the Executive Committee remains committed to the need for funding USM alumni endeavors. To provide some financial resources to each constituent campus during the 2009 grant cycle, we are awarding equal funds to the appropriate office that oversees alumni programs on each respective campus. It will be left to the discretion of each campus entity to determine how this money will be distributed or the programs it should be applied. Checks will be sent to the appropriate office on your campus during the first week in October 2009. The specific amount is still yet to be determined and agreed upon. A separate notification will be sent once a vote has been taken. As usual, AA-I requires a grant report that states how the funds were used and positive outcomes by June 30, 2010. A form that more fully describes the necessary elements of the grant report will be included with the check and can also be found on the AA-I website.

AA-I will inform all USM alumni organizations of the changes to the grant program for the 2010 cycle. Please feel free to contact me or your AA-I campus representative (see Executive Committee) if you have any questions.

We look forward to working with you.
